Chrome and silver ring fitting guide for BMW E38 E39 E53 5 series 7 series and X5
Simple instructions by Speedofixer
Tools needed:
Each of the 3 models is essentially the same but slighlty different in removal only.
X5/ 7 series E38 only has x2 screws holding the cluster in as does the E38 7 series , these two are the easiest and quicket to get out.
Removal: undo the two screws then use the plastic tool above or similar to act as a wedge to move speedo forward then pull forward with your hands.
E39 5 series you will need to remove the two wood or metal strips on either side of the steering wheel that has screws underneath it. Use the trim tool for this , in some cases you can just pull it with your hands.
Then you will need to remove the x3 T10 torx screws and disconnect the light switch using your small flat screwdriver to push in the pin on the connector. Then just x2 torx screws holding in cluster and then same as the other two models of car
See the pic below that shows the power connectors connected to the back of the instrument: -
This is actually from a range rover but its the same speedo unit !!
Press in button to slide lever to release connector. Once you have unplugged the connectors it looks like photo below: -
Once u have the speedo loose - take your screwdriver and insert into the tab that holds the two parts together. Apply gentle pressure then take your pliers and twist the centre locking tab first- see next pic. There are further pics and video here on this part
Twist centre tab first , at the same time keep screwdriver in place applying gentle pressure to left tab. The pressure allows the twisted part to stay unlocked so that you can twist the next one on the left. You need to slowly work your way round- some patience will be required the first time you do this.
slowly work your way round till they are all unlocked
Then its out : - You can now fit rings if you have them.
